Module 1 Discussion: Daycare and Psychosocial Development I have personally experienced this first hand shortly after have my daughter, who is my only child. That being said... in relation to the topic of discussion at hand, if, as a first time parent, I had to place my 3 year old son, who is already somewhat shy into daycare, I would be fighting the emotional battle within myself of what I "want to do" and "what I have to do". As parents, this is a universal battle we deal with on a consistent basis. On one hand, I feel that by the age of three, my son has developed into what I would hope to be; a well adjusted toddler. I may think that 'shielding' my son from all uncomfortable situations and experiences are in his best interest, because then he wouldn't have to feel any social awkwardness. But, if I "have to" send my son to daycare for financial or professional obligatory reasons, then I would need to look at this from a different perspective. Wouldn't a smaller environment with low student to teacher ratios, a less structured daily schedule- (to allow for possibly more affection, and attention) that probably will not be as readily available once he enters kindergarden, seem like a nice introduction into the beginning of his school experiences? It would make sense to allow him the opportunity to get his feet wet, if you will, in the kiddie pool; rather than to just throw a nervous little boy into the deep…show more content…
For instance, I agree that "the most important element of quality care is the caregiver" as stated in (Papalia, 2012, p.203). I would begin asking friends and family for recommendations. I would use the internet to research and look for reviews, as well as contacting the BBB (Better Business Bureau) to look into any complaints filed against the center. I would do interviews with the administrators as well as the teachers to see if our views on child care are in line with one another. I would ask for a list of referrals of previous and current parents whom I could speak with, as well as request to be allowed to sit in on a typical day with my child present to see first hand, how comfortable we both felt in that enviroment. Sitting in for a day with my child present, will also allow me to view for myself how clean the premises are kept, how the other children interact with one another, as well as how my child will interact amongst his potential peers and
