Gateway #6 – Quarter 3 INFERNO, NYC 2012 [pic] Chavelie Maria Cruz ELA 11 – Literature Across Cultures Bronx Lab School – Section #5 April 2, 2012 Dante Inferno had nine circles of suffering located within the Earth. Virgil his guide has guided him through the nine circles of hell. Each circle’s sinner is punished in a fitting for their crimes. Beyond the first circle all of those condemned for active, deliberately willed sin are judged by the serpentine Mino, who sentences each soul to one of the lower eight circles by wrapping his tail around himself a corresponding number of times. The Inferno represents the Christian soul seeing sin for what it really is and the three beasts represent three types of sins: the self-indulgent, the violent, and the malicious. The first five circles are the self-indulgent sins, circles six and seven are the violent sins and the last two circles eight and nine are the malicious sins. Dante’s order of the circles is: Limbo, Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Anger, Heresy, Violence, Fraud, and last Treachery. His order was based on his time. The world today is going through the most effects from wrath/anger. My least relevant hell is Limbo. Limbo is the abode of unbaptized but innocent or righteous souls, as those of infants or virtuous individuals who lived before the coming of Christ. They are punished by living in a deficient from of Heaven. Limbo includes green fields and a seven walled castle, within those walls you find rolling fresh meadows illuminated by the light of reason, whereabouts many shades dwell. It’s really not a punishment and the atmosphere is peaceful but yet sad. I say limbo is the least relevant because in world today it’s really not why many people die. Limbo in the world today is seen as just not being baptized, later on in the years you’ll eventually be baptized. No one
