The Dangers of Social Networking Sites Lester Lambert Blackmon English 102 March 20, 2011 Professor Emily Zickel The Dangers of Social networking Sites Prior to the 1800s, the only forms of communication between humans were very rudimentary by today’s standards. Forms of rudimentary were chisel on stone tablets, Egyptians’ hieroglyphics, and smoke signals, etc. Gradually, the pony express, known today as the United Postal Service was the way people communicated with each other long distance. Next, the telegram, which is a form of Morse code, was invented, and later overtaken by Alexander Graham Bell’s invention of the telephone. With the creation of the computer came the Internet, this introduced an e-mail revolution. Through the Internet, the new generation of World Wide Web users gave way to social networking sites. Most users agree that the social networking sites are a perfect way of keeping in touch with friends and family because one can receive and send messages instantly. However, they do not realize the dangers by posting pictures and schedules of their daily lives on the Internet, which is completely open to strangers. Social networking sites, such as Facebook and MySpace, are risky sites that need to be monitored closely by the parents and individuals because of the lack of privacy, the increase exposure to cyberbullying, and identity theft. Social networking sites have one distinctive characteristic consists of a wall on every member’s page where friends and families can post messages (Duffy, 2008).
