The Dangers of Fast Food Picture this...You’re in a rush. You have skipped both breakfast and lunch, so now you need to eat dinner. What do you do? You see the famous “Golden Arches” and you know you shouldn’t, but somehow you still go to McDonald’s. We all know how incredibly bad fast food is for our bodies, but we still eat it. Why? There are three main reasons: convenience, price, and taste. Convenience, fast food is almost frighteningly fast to make and to serve, therefore making it ideal for people who are in a rush. Price, fast food is usually very cheap, which is perfect for teens, young adults and people on a budget. Taste, we all love the taste of Big Macs and those crispy, golden fries. These three reasons have made the fast food industry one of the biggest in the world. However, foods like these can cause a wide range of medical problems, such as but not limited to extreme obesity, blocked arteries (which cause heart attacks), and an increase in blood pressure. These problems are detrimental to our individual health, and can eventually cause major expenses for the society as a whole too. Did you know that the average Big Mac has 30g of fat, 540 calories, and 80mg of cholesterol? And that’s not even including your drink, fries, dessert, and anything else you might get. Together, large fries and a Big Mac would give you more than half of your daily intake of calories, almost 100% of your fat intake, and more than 50% of your cholesterol intake. And remember, this is just a typical meal from your local McDonald’s. With this much fat, cholesterol and calories, you can clearly see why today’s society is experiencing a huge growth of extreme obesity in both children AND adults.
