No matter how many flyers would be sent out to residences, nor how many commercials announced that pesticide would be sprayed on a particular day there are still citizens that would have been uninformed to what was taking place. The poor citizens that do have television and the uneducated citizens that would not understand what they were reading and the harmful effects that the pesticide would have on them would be the ones typically to be outdoors when the spraying is taking place. The agricultural workers in the fields would be sprayed or would handle fruit or vegetables with the residue from the pesticide and get very ill. Killing the mosquitoes is a short term fix, when in all actuality the city needs to take the money donated and educate the citizens and tourist on how to avoid contracting the West Niles Virus. Educating people how to take care of themselves is a long term solution that will not cause irreparable damage to the
Secondary effects include respiration problems from the plumes of smoke, land slides from soil erosion, and economic losses. As the fires burn large plumes of smoke begin to saturate the air and make the quality of air very poor for breathing. According to (usgs.gov) over 70% of people were affected by respiratory problems from poor air quality in and around the San Diego area during the 2007 wildfires. Another secondary impact of wildfires is soil erosion. Soil erosion occurs when the land is depleted of valuable nutrients making it susceptible to landslides and mudslides in the wet
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Christopher Lanenga Kendra Tillis Mandy Duea Marna Nersesian Michael Eiden HCS 330 October 4, 2010 Sheela Hirao Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Although many have heard of the destruction smoking and nicotine can do, much only associate lung cancer with this deadly habit; however, a more common disease can develop. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is the most frequent form of lung disease, which typically develops after long-term exposure to irritants that damage the lungs and the airways. COPD breaks down into two forms, which are chronic bronchitis, a long-term cough with mucous, and emphysema, defined as a destruction of the lungs over time. In the United States, approximately
Two environmental problems caused by extensive plastic bag use are the chemicals that make the plastic bag and the way we dispose of them. Plastic bags are very dangerous to the environment. The plastic bag is made of toxic chemicals like xylene, ethylene oxide and benzene. Plastic bags are non-biodegradable which means these toxic harmful chemicals are putting people and the environment at risk. Because people don't dispose of the plastic bags properly they get into water ways which eventually affect the see life as well as all other animals and living organisms including plants.
Due to its high tides and adjacent river to the creek, the water became brackish water, a mixture of fresh water, salt water and human waste. These elements caused the diseases that killed both the settlers and the Powhatan people, a Native American tribe. (Document A). Another cause of near failure in Jamestown is known as the Jamestown droughts. These unstable rainfalls caused economical and environmental problems within both groups living in Jamestown.
These emissions can become acid rain and if it can damage a tree, it can and does damage coral. According to the Coral Reef Alliance; the world’s oceans have had “approximately 525 billion tons of carbon dioxide” dumped by human activity within their waters. [ (Coral Reef Alliance, 2012) ]. The site also goes on to state that the destruction of Mangroves,(which have been harvested for lumber) and the loss filtering saltwater swamps due to farming have caused quite a bit of stress on coral reefs. Then there are the odd ways we humans go about “enjoying the ocean”.
I have learned that the use of toxic chemicals during the fracking process and the occurring release of toxic chemicals and radioactive materials during well processing is bad for the environment. Such as, Naphthalene, Xylene, Toluene, Methylbenzene, and Formaldehyde, are all known or suspected to be human carcinogens (Schmidt). Also Hydraulic fracking hurts the environment by the contaminating the water wells, and springs, in which many humans and animals drink from. Another environment impact of hydraulic fracturing is air pollutions. Finally the way fracking impacted animal and human health.
If a human inhales ground-level ozone it can cause chest pain, throat irritation, and congestion. It also affects the wild life as the animals that eat certain leaves and plant which can have problems producing food. Chlorofluorocarbons are normally found in Freon, halons, methyl bromide, methyl chloroform and carbon tetrachloride. The damage CFCs causes to our ozone layer is very dangerous especially since the ozone layer protects us from ultra violet radiation from the sun. If we continue to dispose of these chemicals in correctly it will continue hurt us especially by affecting the brain, eyes, heart, kidney and the reproductive system if large amount is exposed to
Fracking is inherently risky, there is extensive evidence to suggest that fracking can contaminate groundwater and that it causes significant air pollution. For the first time in history, smog has become a major issue in many rural communities in the US, with some villages in Wyoming experiencing worse smog than downtown Los Angeles and an increase in lung cancer cases of over 500%. Since 2005, 1.2 trillion litres has been wasted in the fracking process creating toxic waste which cannot be recycled and must be disposed of very carefully to avoid danger to humans and the environment. In addition, one in six deep injection wells examined have an integrity violation leading to the leaking of toxic waste into the environment – more than 17,000 violations in the US alone. Such is the desperation for energy in the US, fracking has had to be made exempt from parts of at least seven major national statutes, including the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act and Safe Drinking Water Act in order for it to be made legal.
Sophie Zinolidis QUIT SMOKING Smoking is bad and we all know it. But not many knows why it’s so dangerous. They just know it’s a fact. And even more important, there are several bad things that comes with smoking and still so many people smoke. So why is smoking bad for you?
