Kim, HongHee Casey Parks 30 October 2012 Descriptive Essay My Hometown, Daegu Have you heard of Usain Bolt? He won three gold medals at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Also he has the World Record in the 100m sprint. Last year, he came to Daegu because there was the 13th IAAF World Championship in Athletics. This event is known as an international significant event in sports. Surprisingly, In 2011, Daegu was chosen as the third Asian country to host this event. Why did people select Daegu as the host of the event this time? Daegu is an attractive and interesting city that receives attention from people all over the world. Daegu is located in the southeast of South Korea. It is known as the fourth largest city among South Korea’s top six cities including Seoul, Busan, Incheon, Ulsan, and Gwangju. Its population is 2,528,933 as of June 2012. Also, Daegu boasts of its wonderful nature. Daegu has three mountains: Palgong Mountain, Daedeok Mountain, and Biseul Mountain. The city lies in a small basin surrounded by these mountains. When I was young, my family used to go to the Palgong Mountain which is noted for the glorious tints of its autumn foliage and cool valleys. So, I usually go to this mountain for camping and swimming with my friends. The Shinchun River and Geumho River run through Daegu from north to south. Eventually, these rivers join with the Nakdong River. Compared to other places in South Korea, it has a typical temperate climate because of its location and geographical features. For this reason, Daegu is one of the hottest cities in South Korea. According to the data, its average summer temperature is between 93℉ and 98℉. It has an average annual precipitation of 1027.9 mm. Daegu has an interesting historical background. Historically, many people used to call Daegu “Dalgubul”, which means a large field and a big castle during the Joseon
