D. L. Woodside, Sunshine Snacks This case is about D. L. Woodside, who has taken a new position at Sunshine Snacks as director of research and development. He moved from Skid’s where he had a very successful career as assistant director of research and development. The reason Woodside moved to a new company, is because he felt as though he would never move into the director position at Skid’s. As an assistant director, Woodside was very personable, and motivated to finish every job he started. He was single-handedly responsible for the creation of four product lines at Skid’s. When he moved to Sunshine Snacks he saw that most of the employees were dedicated to the assistant director, and that they were resisting Woodside as the new director. Woodside has the traits of having technical knowledge, interpersonal skills, cooperativeness, and drive. These traits would help him succeed in his new position. By showing his drive and technical knowledge of the research and development division, he could most likely get the employees to follow him. Having interpersonal skills and cooperativeness would also help him to accelerate this process by making good relationships with the employees. Traits that could be detrimental to Woodside would be his Woodside seems to be a people-oriented leader. People-oriented leaders have a concern for people and are considerate to their employees (Daft, 2008). Woodside shows this in the case by covering for an employee, George, who has a drinking problem. The case also says that Woodside would cover employees who did not know what they were doing, as he didn’t want the employee to be punished. We think that it would be best for Woodside to be a people-oriented leader. We believe that this leadership style has worked wondrously for Woodside in the past, and that he may be able to replicate the results at Sunshine. If Woodside is
