The Curious Incident of the dog in the night time is about 15 years old boy named Christopher and finds the world a confusing place. Suffering from autism leads him to see the world at a different perspective. Haddon allowed us to have an insight through Christopher’s personality, the uses of visual representation throughout the novel and Christopher’s perception of relationship. Firstly, the depiction of Christopher is very accurate and his personality is unique. Christopher says,” I know all the countries in the world and their capital cities and every prime number up to 7,507”. Readers understand that Christopher is gifted with considerable ability. But they also realize that he can only live effectively within strict routine and patterns. For example he won’t eat food if different sorts of food are touching each other, and he has an aversion to the colours yellow and brown. Further, everyday interactions and communication have little meaning for him. As he doesn’t like others touching him, when the police officer holds his arm he retaliates by hitting him. He also lacks awareness of other people’s emotions, and doesn’t understand his father’s angry question, “What the hell were you doing poking around her garden?” However, when it is necessary Christopher is able to demonstrate independence of thought and action, despite the challenges he faces. When he discovers his mother is alive he travels to London to find her, yet while he is on a train he climbs into the luggage shelf and stays there because he feels safe. On another occasion he sits paralyzed with anxiety for five hours but refuses to abandon his quest. On the last page he says, “I found mother … that means I can do anything”, showing how the journey has lifted his confidence.
