India is a nation of vast diversity. Each and every state has its own cultural traditions. I was born and raised in one small town of India where people follow the same traditional culture which is a century old. Because it’s our heritage and as an Indian we should preserve it, my parents were also following the same path. I was also raised by following the same cultural and moral values which is indeed a great gift for me. We have some strong religious and family values which I have carried on so far but I have left behind some society values as I think they should change according to the current time and place. Religion has profound impact on me, and it has also inspired me to be a vegetarian. India is a birthplace of many great religions such as Hindu, Jain, Sikh and Buddha. Hindu religion basically believes in one God or Goddess. Hinduism also includes a notion of “Karma”. My family believed in Hinduism; that’s why I also have strong faith towards Hindu lord. According to Hindu religion we are not allowed to eat a non-vegetarian food. In short, we cannot eat any kinds of animal products which can obtain from killing animal for example pork, meat or beef. When I first came to the United States, I was surprised by many people who just eat animal foods. Sometime I feel so awkward to go to the lunch or dinner with my American friends because it is hard for me to see somebody eating non vegetarian food in front of me. Many of my friends had changed themselves after coming to the United States. They also started eating animal foods, but my strong religious belief and my morals have helped me stick with my decision to be vegetarian. As Judith Ortiz Cofer describes in “The myth of the Latin women”, “It is custom, however, not chromosomes, that leads us to choose scarlet over pale pink”.
