Culture and technology Culture is a broad term. The dictionary definition of culture is "the customary beliefs, social forms, and material traits of a racial, religious, or social group." [ (Webster, 2011) ] Any of the social forms or beliefs of a group may influence or in turn be influenced by a new technology. One important aspect of a society's culture is the relationship between human and environment. In this essay I shall concentrate on how technology interacts with this element of culture, analysing how particular society’s relationships with their environment gave rise to particular technologies and how those technologies in turn influenced these society’s relationships with their environments. Human culture, technology and nature are forever evolving and adapting with each other in a dynamic trend. This trend has shaped and will continue to shape the way we live in and perceive our habitat. All of humanity’s technological advancements have stemmed from our ever changing needs and constraints. The more we grow as a species, the more we need to utilise the world around us. Our technologies all develop from the needs of a unique culture, but once developed the technology will change the culture that gave it birth. Inevitably the technology will spread to different human cultures and is usually utilized in different ways, depending on each cultural context. The changes in culture that one technology creates may then influence the development of another or different technology. All technologies are shaped by their particular cultural context. Different physical environments and geographies create different needs that require solutions. An example can be found in the Levant of the Middle East, where the first Mesopotamian civilizations developed.
