Many white kids are "cultural tourists” who idolize the very ghetto life that so many young black kids want to escape. Instead of the terrible death rate for young black males, they see the glamour of violence. Instead of the frustration of people denied jobs and hope and respect, they see the verbal defiance of that frustration. According to Russell Simmons (hip hop's
Rhythm and blues was popular among the African American population, but until the early fifties, the white audience had little interest in this type of music. African American singers were the first to play Rock’ n’ Roll. Production studios became interested in this style of music and introduced it to America. For teenagers, listening to Rock ‘n’ Roll became a way of being a part of something exciting, as well as a way to rebel against the standards of society. Attention to the white society is crucial, because it will always stand as the dominant culture. Hip-hop is best identified with the African-American culture.
He was speaking to the many narrow minded cultural nationalist that doesn’t approve of rap music on the island.
