Name: Date: 7-11-13 Instructor: ATTEND A CULTURAL EVENT Every culture is distinctly different and has its own unique characteristics. Many things about a particular culture may not make sense until you take a closer look. You can tell a lot about a specific culture by things as simple as the clothes they wear, or the food they eat. Cultural events are important to the college mission because it helps to understand diversity. The United States consist of many different cultures and it is important to understand and appreciate the large array of different lifestyles and beliefs. For my cultural event I went to The House of Asian. I had never eaten Thai food before so I decided to give it a try. Not knowing anything about Thai food I asked the waitress “What is your most popular Thai dish?” She responded “Our red curry is pretty popular”. “Ok I’ll try that” I said. The dish itself looked really good. It consisted of sliced bell peppers, onions, bamboo shoots, and beef in red curry sauce served with a side of white rice. My response to this dish was “OMG, its hot”. As a fan of spicy foods I loved the flavor but this dish had me sweating. So it automatically raised the question, why so spicy? When I got home I researched what I had experienced. I found that there are several reasons for the spice in Thai foods. Thai foods contain a lot of fresh ingredients such as the onions, bell peppers and bamboo shoots that where in my dish and the acidity of the hot peppers naturally preserve them. Thais also believe that spicy foods have health benefits such as boosting the immune system and improving cardiovascular health. It is also used to kill bacteria in the dishes that include fermented meat to prevent foodborne illnesses. Last but not least Thailand has a hot and muggy climate that is ideal for bacterial growth and spicy peppers natural destroy
