Inter-racial and multi-ethnic families are growing rapidly. More and more children are being born with two or more different ethnic or racial backgrounds. Richard Rodriguez, a noted American essayist and social commentator, calls this the “browning of America.” He is not speaking of just skin color, but how we have started to borrow from these cultures. What is emerging is a new blending of people and culture. Economic changes are slowly taking place to accommodate the intermixing of cultures.
Teaching civics, civic responsibility and ethics in schools would target the highest percentage of children. “A person educated in mind and not in morals is a menace to society” (Juanita Kidd) Schools/ government officials should call upon our nation’s youth as JF Kennedy did by asking “ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country” by encouraging volunteerism and community outreach programs, which will help children develop compassion and empathy, a vital step in Kohlberg’s stages of moral development. The average American see 3000-5000 ads daily, to be able to utilize such an effect form targeting would be a key component in changing Americas society. Supporting the Ad council of America and how they do business with private organizations like the transportation department. Positive ads such as “friends don’t let friends drive drunk” and the NAACP slogan “a mind is a terrible thing to waste” will help raise the conscience level of young people and make them think more about how their actions affect other people.
Considered by most to be the backbone of America, it is how we socially and culturally indoctrinate our offspring so they are able to become a functional member of society. A lack of a full family is often cited as the reason that children end up as criminals or delinquents. The notion of family being the birthplace of problems is not even something most people could find feasible, which is what makes Barbara Ehrenreicht's essay "Are Families Dangerous?" seem a bit out in left field to most readers. But upon closer inspection and reflection into ones own family life, and the lives of those around them, Ehrenreicht's essay begins to make a lot more sense.
These hard working parents and dedicated teachers all want to see America with a brighter future, they are doing what they can to make sure that there children grow up to be important part of a good generation. Now it is time for the school districts that are stealing money and government who is not regulation the education system well too do there part and make sure all that money that people have worked hard for and the parents hard work pays off, with better education system for American
In society today there are still problems of hate crimes towards people of different races and religions. We were taught in secondary school about the past and about Martin Lither King Jr. and the civil rights movement but we were taught that from an outside view. This book shows the reader how hard it really was and how difficult it is for Ruth and her family to live in the time period and have their view of it, instead of taking an educated guess on how they felt and how it affected them. In many cases it’s difficult for anyone especially Caucasians to understand how it feels to be discriminated against. The in the book there is a part where he talks about how he wants African American children to see how it was
Black Arabs/Muslims--particularly after 9/11) • Immigration policies are racist and classist • Visible discrimination in advertisements and ads Parents are uniquely positioned to guide their children to appreciate the differences that make each of us special. Following are some of the positive steps which are to be taken around our society and family in order to promote and recognizing diversity. * If you ever hear or see your child doing anything that does not embrace diversity, immediately talk to him or her about bias and prejudice. * Point out stereotypes, acts of prejudice and bias depicted in TV, movies, computer games and other media to help your child recognize unacceptable behavior or attitudes. * Encourage your children’s' friendships with people who are different from them.
This means the divide will continue to grow unless all parents take a more active role in the amount of time their children spend using media devices. Why is the digital divide problem an ethical dilemma? The digital divide appears to single out white children as having parents who pay more attention to them. This type of thinking promotes a continuation of stereotyping and prejudice that minorities are trying to combat. Ethically we are encouraged to treat everyone equal.
Gatto is saying that schooling is made for kids to adapt to; it has adaptive qualities, therefore there is a chance for everyone to succeed if they really want to, but it takes away from any individual thinking. Conforming is another evil of school because it makes us forced to learn things we really have no interest in and as Gatto states “its intention is to make children as alike as possible”(153). A lot of students use this excuse while they are in high school “when am I ever going to use this again in life” ill be honest I have said it before but I don't necessarily agree with these students because you need to build a base education before you figure out what you want your schooling to focus on. Kids change their minds everyday, I realized that I’m not quite sure I want to be an art major anymore, even being in the first couple of classes I knew it wasn’t for me
(McHugh pg 166) Until we get to the age of not being treated like a child, we won’t need their guidance to make sure that we stay on the right path and are being the best people we can be. We have to hope that these programs and community centers and people can help lower the amount of kids joining any kind of gangs because to many of them die every year. If kids have support and limitations, they usually tend to do better and have an all round better life. If kids see that the support is there and someone is caring for them there really would be no reason for kids to be in
Diversity in the United States November 15, 2012 ETH/125 There is a wide amount of diversity in the United States today. There are many different types of race, culture, religions, people with disabilities, and even the type of life style someone chooses. Diversity is something everyone should learn about, because this affects your work place, around where you live, and even in the schools. Things I have learned about diversity is that each group has many similarities and many differences. I have learn by embracing the differences of each group, I have learned how others live, new ways of thinking and have been introduced to many new cultures.
