As legislation is the fundamental guidance to provide the required services to all people in need and the values of their identity, their culture and their ability can influence the methods of communication, the same legislation allows these people to have the rights to be offered the facilities for their entire wellbeing in a multicultural environment or society through the established techniques and strategies of communication accessible to all

CULTURAL COMPETENCE IN HEALTH CARE Diversity in Health Care July, 2011 The United States is a country consisting of many cultures, races, and religions. It is becoming increasingly diverse and global, with many minority cultures and races developing into majority cultures and races. Newer religions take their place alongside traditional faiths. Both cultural and spiritual differences in people are potential causes for misunderstanding, confusion, and conflict arising from intolerance and ignorance of these differences. It therefore becomes apparent why it is imperative for professionals of all types to have an awareness, knowledge, and appreciation for others whose beliefs, practices, and values are different.
If I feel the decision the individual makes would cause harm to themselves, myself or any other being I am them faced with a dilemma. If a client refused to take their medication I would be faced with the dilemma between my duty of care and the individuals rights. These discrepancies are seen in healthcare settings and sometimes affects a person’s ability to receive proper healthcare and/or visit sick family members. This can include being denied opportunities such as employment or accommodation because of their illness. Stigma in the form of social distancing has been observed when people are unwilling to associate with a person with mental illness. This might include not allowing the person to provide childcare, or declining the offer of a date (Corrigan et al, 2001). Self-discrimination or internalised discrimination is the process in which people with mental health problems turn the stereotypes about mental illness adopted by the public, towards themselves. They assume they will be rejected socially and so believe they are not valued (Livingston and Boyd,

Lifestyle is another barrier that can interfere with the care a patient or client may receive because the caregiver might allow personal feelings get in the way of the professional side. An example I can give is, I had gone to a caregiver in regards to my daughter, while the caregiver was asking me some questions about my personal history, some that may have had an effect on my daughters issues, the caregiver gave an expression that showed how she felt about the question on a personal note.
