His intelligence was the reason for victory in the Trojan War, tricking the Cyclops and getting revenge from the suitors During the Trojan War, Odysseus ordered for a wooden horse to be built so soldiers can hide inside of it. Him and his men hid inside and ended up attacking the people in Troy which gave them victory. This shows that Odysseus’s cunning is a virtue because without him the Greeks wouldn’t have won the Trojan War. Now onto tricking the Cyclops, Odysseus and his men came upon a cave with food not knowing it was the Cyclops. Odysseus knew he couldn’t physically defeat the Cyclops so he used his intelligence to defeat him.
Odysseus was the first one to realize that if they had killed the Cyclops they would be trapped in the cave forever. “If we kill him now, we may be trapped inside this cave forever.” (Homer 7) Odysseus knows that actions always have positives and negatives, so he thought of the harm that would create if he killed the Cyclops so he waited. As Odysseus’s intelligence grows his knowledge of speech grows too. When the Cyclops, Polyphemus, asks Odysseus his name, he replied in a very sneaky, intelligent way. “Nobody, that is the name my father gave me: Nobody.” (Homer 8) Odysseus was able to
Every time in the story as he encounters the problem in the way the God helps him. It is hard to compare the qualities between the great hero and me; somehow I have qualities similar and different then him. Heroes are people who saved the people. The main character in the Homers epic poem, Odysseus possesses heroic qualities, such as bravery, wisdom, a strategic thinking, courageous, strength, cleaver, extravagant curiosity, and honorable. As in the story when he escapes from Cyclops cave he showed that he was brave and a great strategist when he poked Cyclops eye with pike of olive, he decided not to kill him because if he killed Cyclops, he would not be able to get out of the cave.
Although this crafty hero has many other great qualities, these qualities are the highlights of his character. Odysseus’s best quality, in my opinion, is his sneaky cleverness. Odysseus is always thinking, and he shows it numerous times throughout his adventures. One of his most crafty plans, on page 225, was when he tied himself and all of his men to the Cyclops’s ram’s bellies and escaped from the Cyclops into their ship. Polyphemus, the Cyclops, didn’t sense that the Odysseus and the men were hiding, and when he let is rams free, the crew escaped.
Odysseus understood that if he just wounded the Cyclops, himself and his men might the risk the chance of being stuck in there forever so instead he gets his men inspired to get the Cyclops drunk and hide underneath the bellies of his sheep. Odysseus is also smart when recognizing when and how he should trust his crewmen. He has a well tolerance for listening but learned quickly that his men do not. He also keeps secrets to which he shouldn’t because it would’ve stopped the crew men from opening the bag of wind but the fact that he was capable of keeping everyone alive, proves that Odysseus was intelligent, fair and fearless. He proved himself clever when he gave the Cyclops his name as Nohbdy so when the cyclop screamed “Nobody hurt me!” Odysseus and his men would remain harmless.
When an Admiral makes him step into the ring and fights he ends up killing or dame near close too killing all three guys. They were quickly sent on there first real mission and passed with out anyone dieing John was shoot once but he fought threw the pain and made sure the mission was finished. He was giving a purple heart for actions. The next chapter there given there MJOLNIR IV armor this is what they were created for no one had enough speed and power and a trough body to use the armorer except for the Spartan's. It comes at a cost because the group was being chased by a convent ship when they decided bored the ship to find out more on the enemy and to destroy the ship.
Abraham the father of the nation of Israel has lived such a different live than Odysseus the emblem of heroism but even though throughout Abrahams live he proves over and over again that he is also worthy of being called an Epic Hero. Every great hero is well known for his military tactics. Tactics that not just save people’s live but are genius in idea. Odysseus shows his brilliance when he saves his men from Cyclops or when he comes up with the idea of the Trojan Horse . Abraham had to save his nephew Lot, Genesis describes Abraham as “wealthy in livestock and in silver and gold”, the Bible says that he had donkeys and camel.
Odyssey Essay Hero’s must exhibit cleverness and leadership in order to save lives, keeps people calm through challenging situations, and keep calm for themselves during pressing matters. To be a successful hero you must be clever. After the Cyclops eats some of Odyssey’s men, Homer writes, “Here’s liquor to wash down your scrapes of men” (Bk 9, Ln 256-257). Odysseus offers the Cyclops his best wine hoping to find a way out of his cave. This demonstrates cunningness, Odysseus is planning to get the Cyclops in order save his and the rest of his men from being eaten by the Cyclops.
Odysseus’ quick thinking helps him and his men escape the island of Cyclops. Odysseus cleverly gives Cyclops a lot of wine, and blinds him when he goes to sleep, “So with our brand we bored that great eye socket while blood ran out around the red-hot bar” (337-338). Thus Odysseus is able to escape from the island of Cyclops because of his wit and strength. Not only is Odysseus clever, he is also proves to be a good leader. Odysseus displays leadership when faced with Charybdis, a monster that swallows the
Odysseus is also clever when he planned out a way to pass through the island of siren, which had a monsters that sang and lured sailors to jump off the ship and swim straight to the monster and it would eat them: “Take me and bind me to the half way up the mast; bind me as I stand upright, with a bond so fast that I cannot possibly break away…If I beg and pray to set me free, then bind me more tightly still.’’(XII. 60-67) Here we see Odysseus cleaver plan being presented to his crew man and where we find out later that it works, because the story continues on and that he gets home later. Odysseus was also able to show his bravery throughout the poem many times. We can find that Odysseus’ bravery is tested when he visits Hades, who ruled the kingdom of the dead. When he arrives there, he takes out the cup of blood for the prophet, which attracts all of the dead souls: "This entire crowd gathered about the pit from every side, with a dreadful great noise, which made me pale with fear."
