Task 1 My Community Observation I had the pleasure of undertaking my observation at Park Central Taxi Rank, popularly known as MTN Noord. Upon my arrival I was greeted by a scene of bustling activity and a great diversity of people, there were commuters, taxi drivers, touts, vendors, beggars even the unofficial ‘tsotsis’ looking for opportunities as illustrated in the above photographs. It was interesting observing the mix of individuals from different backgrounds interacting and going about their business. I heard a lot of tongues spoken and these included IsiZulu, Xhosa, Sesotho, Sepedi, Afrikaans, French(Congolese), Ndebele as well a group of West Africans that spoke animatedly as they shared their thoughts amongst themselves. From my position of observation in aisle 9, I noticed the multi-linguistic talents of the taxi drivers and the touts. Their talents were brought to light by the way they interacted with commuters of different linguistic backgrounds, people were asking for directions and touts were calling for passengers in a multitude of languages. I noticed that even commuters are also not limited to a single language, as they waited for and boarded their taxis, they chatted amongst themselves and found common ground to communicate with each other.
