Cultural Diversity: CUS1.4 Describes the cultural, linguistic and religious practices of their family, their community and other communities. Teaching culture is a very vital component to a child’s development, as they are now more exposed to various cultural differences within their group of friends, schools, and clubs. When children understand about themselves and others they will then be more likely to socially interact with other children from different cultures. They will understand, identify and appreciate human similarities and differences. Students will further understand and learn the diverse cultures of Australia and their origins, such as Aboriginal and Torres Straits Islander cultures. When the First Fleet arrived in Sydney in 1788, there were estimated to be about 60 different nationalities among the crew and convicts. Since then, extensive immigration from countries and cultures from around the world have extended the cultural and linguistic diversity of Australia’s population making it one of the most diverse populations in the world today. We are proud to live in a solid, broad society in which the cultures, languages, and religions of millions of Australians have transformed our social and cultural landscape. Australian multiculturalism embraces the heritage of indigenous Australians, early European settlement, our Australian-grown customs and traditions and experiences of new migrants coming to this country; and promotes mutual respect and equality, aiming to enhance social structure and Australia’s capacity to survive both external and domestic tensions. Therefore, students need to understand the significance of Australian diverse culture. For instance looking at Australia Day, why we celebrate it and the importance of it to our country.
