BRIDGE FAILURES ACROSS THE WORLD INTRODUCTION : In our lives we use bridges to move from one place to another. And bridges are one of the ways that will move us from the island to the Beach and from one area to another area that are separated by a river. We always hear collapses of bridges, but we do not know the reasons for its collapse. And the average age of bridges that fail comes to 52.5 years (ascelibrary). In this report, we will know the reasons for the failure of bridges around the world. This report brings out main causes for bridge failure across the world; namely natural causes and defective/ man-made causes. NATURAL CAUSES OF BRIDGE FAILURE ACROSS THE WORLD Natural causes for bridges failure are tidal sea, calamities such as floods, typhoons/tempests etc. The first natural causes for bridge failures across the world is tidal sea. Because of the tides, concrete gradually peels off that results in holes. Such holes generally extend alongside the concrete and then the metal appear and is exposed to corrosion (bridge inspection guide). The weather can be a major cause of bridges failure because in some countries they have extreme climatic changes and continuing of this for many days can cause crumbling on the surface of concrete (bridge inspection guide). Over a period of time, this weakens the concrete and result in its breaking and unable to continue its existence resulting in its collapse. The second natural cause for bridges collapse across the world is floods. A lot of bridges in the United States for example collapsed because of floods. The floods disaster in 1993 bridge failures were almost 53% of all failures. Because of strong and violent water-flow on to the bridge together with heavy winds cause debris-buildup which shifts the bridge resulting in its collapse (ascelibrary). Example – Bridge Chunk Creek Train Treck – the
