In a nursing home there is such a fixed routine that service users are unable to choose what they eat, when they eat, when they drink, what times of the day they are assisted to the toilet. this can cause an individual to become unable to make desitions for themselves and in worst cases unable to re adjust to life outside of an instituion. Self Neglect - An individual not looking after themsleves or treeting their own needs with respect causing there condition to deteriorate. Neglect by others - Purposefully not giving a person the care support they need when it is you’re responsabity to do so. 2.2 Signs and/or Symptoms Associated With Each Type of Abuse; Physical -Signs could include a persons mood deterierating becoming scared, jumpy and untrusting.

Self Neglect; is a behavioural condition in which an individual neglects to attend to their basic needs, such as personal hygiene, appropriate clothing, feeding or tending appropriately to any medical conditions they have and generally not taking care of them self. Neglect by Others; occurs when the needs of the individual is not met. Neglect can be passive or active. As a result of neglect people can become ill, hungry, cold, and dirty, injures or deprived of their right. Whether neglect is intentional or nor, the result is the deterioration of the individuals well being.

Pain can effect individuals communication so it is therefore important to observe their behaviour for signs of pain. The individual may become distressed and agitated and they may shout out in pain. They could become angry and react badly to other people and become verbally abusive. 2. Encourage an individual to express feelings of discomfort or pain.
