Potter Stewart, an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court, once said, “Ethics is the difference between knowing what you have the right to do, and knowing what is right to do.”() In the business world, there are many ways to make money. Some of these ways are legal according to government law; some of them are illegal and sometimes are never noticed. I believe that companies should legally do everything in their power to raise shareholder wealth, on the basis that they use ethical and socially responsible methods. Under these conditions a corporation will have a positive impact on the community, on society, and will continue to generate profit, which ultimately is their main objective. People tend to argue that since a corporation’s main objective is to make money, they don’t care about the public. Through this paper I will describe how corporations are catering to the needs of the public yet still finding ways to make money and profit off of it. When a corporation opens a store, whether it is in a small down or a big city, it will have a big impact on the community that it is in. A big store, usually means that there will be a lot of new jobs opening up. The bigger the store the more money it is bound to make, but also the bigger the store more operational costs will incur. It is the economy that creates jobs, not people.() The only way to deal with daily operations that need to happen day to day is to hire more employees. This is great news for the area where a store is put up because it creates many jobs for people in a variety of different ways, whether it be stocking shelves, working in the back or working at the till. Now the selection process of the employees is crucial because there are the people that are selling the product.
