Cryptology and Data Protection Abstract Business organizations of this generation tend to create a lot of flexibilities into their business transactions in order to make life comfortable for their customers and to offer the best services in order to increase patronage as the market becomes more competitive. Online transactions have become part of everybody’s daily activities that we hardly can do without it. As comfortable as it is so also the risk attached to it are very high; hence the need to ensure adequate and efficient security measures are in place. Not only should there be security measures against the foreseen and unforeseen attacks but these measures should be regularly checkmate against the threats and audited for consistency. This paper will begin with the introduction of a scenario where a security breach was experience in an organization that utilizes a form of Symmetric Encryption Technology- Triple Data Encryption Standard (3DES), the description of Data Encryption Standard (DES) and 3DES, facts that were determined from this occurrence, the plausible explanation of what happened, the recommendation and conclusion for this organization with the intension of retaining 3DES as its cryptographic system.
