Major Theme: Domestic Abuse Pye family over three generations are a prime example of domestic abuse. Jackson Pye, one of the founding fathers- designs and builds his own house and a house for a future family. He has a terrible temper that drives his sons away until he is left with only two, in the end another son leaves, leaving Arthur Pye to suffer. Jackson eventually dies leaving the farm to Art, who also abuses his family throughout time. The third generation, Calvin Pye had a family who was connected to the Morrison children. Later in the novel Matt finds out that he made Marie Pye (daughter of Calvin) pregnant. She reveals that her father has killed her brother by accident and when Calvin Pye kills himself, Matt has to give up his plans for education and marry Marie. Character Development: Matt sacrifices his studies and a chance at a very good post-secondary education. He develops into a big hearted character instead of the nice and very intelligent character he is known as. The passing of his parents also give Matt to think for his siblings before anything or anyone. Working a job and doing school at the same time shows Matt sacrificing time for his self-enjoyment and relaxation just to put food in front of his family. Literary luminary: Foreshadowing: Foreshadowing was used to an extreme extent in this chapter. Since in this chapter the history of the Pyes was discussed thoroughly the foreshadowing was used to predict what would happen to the current generation of Pye’s. Short Summary: In chapter 10, Kate tells us about the Pye family history as she learned it from Ms. Vernon. She goes in-depth with why every generation of the Pye men are so abusive to their children. Kate worked for Ms. Vernon as she took care of her vegetable garden. Ms.Vernon tells Kate that Jackson Pye was a very intelligent man as he designed most of the houses in Crow
