The text we are to analyze in this Essay, is Crossing by Mark Slouka, which is written in 2009. That things are not going as you planned them to be will rip you apart in the end. If you feel ready to conquer the world, but the current is too strong for you to keep up, eventually you will give up. If you have a burden on your shoulders throughout life, it will make your everyday harder for you to cope with. These are the problems our protagonist has throughout the text. He tries to cope with the problems in life, but meets a current that keeps him from achieving this crossing of the river. He keeps getting more burdens on his shoulders, which makes it harder and harder for him to get forward in life. The currents will sometimes keep you from achieving what you want in life. The setting of the text is that it happens in Tacoma, which is a city in Washington State in the United States of America. It takes place in the summer or spring, because even though it is raining, they still sleep in a tent, and jumps into the river. This indicates that it is not winter or fall. We get to know of the stars in the night, where the protagonist can see them, through the cover of the tent. The setting has certain significance for the text, because the setting helps us understand the crossing, and the current you will meet during this crossing. The setting of the text is pretty much based on the described nature / environment throughout the text. If it weren’t for the place they were at the given time in the text, they wouldn’t have had to make this crossing, which in the end caused them a lot of problems. The setting of the text is described thoroughly in the text with some adjectives, to describe the colors, and feelings these certain settings makes the protagonist feel, for example when he has flashbacks.
