“Work and living culture in merchant navy” Nellinilkumthadathil Joseph Vipin Joy (M.E., Renewable Energies) Abstract: This study investigates the working and living culture of a merchant mariner when he is onboard a ship. It can be said that culture is an essential aspects in comprehending an industry, because in order to function it there must have some extent of general assumptions, norms and beliefs. Understanding the context of culture will help the organizations to be aware of how employs perceived about the company and to determine how different attitudes, beliefs, and values affect the work places and implicate the work of employers (Bennet, Aston & Colquhoun, 2000). A career in the merchant navy is considered as one of the ancient profession in the world. Merchant navy is a non-combatant commercial fleet, which deals with transporting cargo and occasionally passengers by sea. A career in this field is full of adventure and long voyages to exotic places. Merchant navy also provides adequate opportunities to see the world, and also good salaries. A professional involved in a merchant marine career gets to meet and mingle with people of different cultures and nationalities. Primarily, the main goal of this paper is to understand different theories of cross-cultural management include Hall and Hall, Geert Hofstede and Fons Tromenaars. This helps the individual to understand and function better as a team player and learn the nuances of different cultures and traditions at the same time.
