Case Study – Alison Alison’s parents (Marie and John) separated due to Marie’s alcohol addiction, this happened when Alison and her brother Darren were quite young. Alison made the decision to live with her mother while Darren preferred to live with dad (John). Eight years later Marie passed away, the reasons were linked to her alcohol consumption; Alison is now 15yrs old and has also encountered a drug and alcohol problem, whilst she frequently truants’ school. Alison’s brother Darren has achieved excellent grades at school; he is now 19yrs old and in his final year of an electrician’s apprenticeship. However over the years Alison’s relationship with her brother and dad has slowly deteriorated, they have virtually become strangers possibly due to the lack of contact. Because of this reason Alison chose to live with her boyfriend (Jack 17yrs) and his parents, Jack’s parents frequently misuse drugs and alcohol. Nevertheless they seemed happy to accommodate Alison although they have explained that this would only be a temporary measure until the practitioner could find Alison alternative accommodation. Involved were negotiations between Alison, John and the practitioner, it was agreed that dad and Alison kept telephone contact once a week this progressed with Alison sleeping at dads house during the weekends. As the months passed the family seemed to strengthen, Alison telephoned the practitioner and explained that she had split up with her boyfriend and she did not wish to live in sheltered accommodation. Alison suggested the possibility of living with her dad and brother; however she felt that her dad no longer loved her as he had recently re married. The practitioner’s task was to reach a compromise with Alison and her dad; the agreement involved Alison accepting boundaries and to change her negative behaviour if she wished to return home.
