Critical Thinking What are the meaning of "Critical" and "Thinking"? In Oxford dictionary, the meaning of the word "Critical" is “expressing or involving an analysis of the merits and faults of a literary or artistic work.” and "Thinking" is "using thought, rational judgment and intelligent." We can understand that critical thinking is thought process involve an analysis the information and then using through, rational judgment and intelligent to pursue the conclusion and solution on our concept. This is complex process that involve on some factors, such as an attitude, analysis, evaluation, communication. When we start thinking about our concept, an attitude can affect the result and make a wrong direction on the whole process. Edward Glaser defined critical thinking as: (1) an attitude of being disposed to consider in a thoughtful way the problems and subjects that come within the range of one's experience. (2) knowledge of the methods of logical inquiry and reasoning, and (3) some skill in applying those methods. Critical thinking calls for a persistent effort to examine any belief or supposed form of knowledge in the light of the evidence that supports it and the further conclusions to which it tends. (Glaster, 1941, p. 5) In critical thinking process, sometimes people have biased and distorted while they are thinking because everyone have their opinion, own value, culture and norm that are emotional. We keep in mind on reasoning that use logical method to lend us thinking reasonable. This is the first step of critical thinking otherwise all other steps will be on the wrong track, and screw up the whole process of thinking. Therefore we need to be open minded on the concept and identify reasons, assumptions and conclusions that develop a appropriate decision.
