Critical Review 7 – Eastern Turkestan or Xinjiang To begin with the general information about it, another name of Xinjiang is Eastern Turkestan. It is located within the borders of People’s Republic of China. It is an administrative district composing eighteen percent of China, therefore, known as the largest division land in the western border.[1] The reason behind the Xinjiang problem is the confrontation between two nations, Han Chinese and Uyghur Turkish Muslims.[2] In the first part of their article “The Xinjiang Problem”, Graham Fuller and S. Frederick Starr explain the problem between these two as follows: “The confrontation revolves primarily around a struggle for domination over the province and a Uyghur quest for autonomy or even independence from Beijing’s rule. Conflicting interests and goals thus offer two quite different visions and narratives of current Xinjiang realities, reflecting the distinct concerns of each people”[3]. To continue with the examination of the article part by part, we can say that in the first part the content of the Xinjiang problem is being mentioned generally. While the second part consists of the geopolitical reasons, which causes the problem, the third part is about the aims, goals also the complaints, problems of the key players of Xinjiang, the Uyghurs and China, against each other. The fourth part informs us about the importance of the Xinjiang problem. In the sixth part, different from the fifth part, which is about the four alternative scenarios, which can make China evolve, therefore effect and shape the Xinjiang problem in the future, other external variables are being examined. Last three parts of the article are briefly explaining the reasons, which can make this problem worse than better and the steps both China and Uyghur should take in order to solve this problem as well as neighboring states and the US.
