Unit 3 Task 4 Incidents can occur in any health and social care setting, caused by carelessness, deliberate harm or mistake by human error. Incident 1 In a care home an elderly man has fallen against a shelf, he has low levels of consciousness and he has a mild head injury- he is also very confused. The possible responses, for this patient is to removed the shelf if it is partially damaged/ causing obstruction/ unstable to prevent it falling further and causing further harm- this is protecting you and the casualty. Once the danger has been removed you should call an ambulance as they have suffered a head injury and fall, so will need further treatment, someone else could do this while you treat, for better time efficiency. You should also open their airway and monitor their breathing, as they could deteriorate quickly. You must keep talking to the casualty, telling them what you are doing whilst treating the head injury. Depending on the high fallen and the severity of the head injury, possibly hold the head to prevent further spinal injury, or put them in the recovery position if then fall was not very great. Also, keep a record of all incidents. Incident 2 There is a suspected intruder walking around the hospital. The man has no ID and doesn’t seem to be visiting any patients. He is causing distress in some of the patients. Firstly security should be made aware so they can keep an eye out for him, this should be done before checking his name and purpose, so if anything happens while you are checking, security are prepared. Then check the details of the person, see if they are a patient, a visitor of a patient etc. If not, approach them with caution, possibly with security on stand by so they do not feel threatened. If they continue to come back into the hospital after the security has removed them from the premises, ring the police. Make sure you keep
