Critical Appreciation about Half a Life by V. S. Naipaul Half a Life is a novel written by V. S. Naipaul and it is about the search for identity. The protagonist is an Indian called Willie Chandran who leaves India looking for his aim in life, trying to be different from his father and to do something real and special. The novel is structured in three parts. The first one is about the life of Willie Chandran’s father. The second one is about the childhood of Willie Chandran in India and his life in England, where he goes when he is twenty years old and stays there for three years. Finally, the third and last chapter of the novel is about Willie Chandran’s life in a Portuguese colony in East Africa with his wife Anna. It is interesting that in the first chapter the narrator is the father; in the second and at the beginning of the last one the narrator is the author; and then, Willie Chandran becomes the narrator in the last part of the novel, where he explains his life in the Portuguese colony in East Africa to his sister Sarojini. Regarding the language used by V. S. Naipaul, it is not difficult to understand, and this creates an easy and quick rhythm in the novel. Moreover, the stories within the novel follow a sequential order that makes the reader follow the reading and do not get lost. The only thing that can make the reader be confused is that sometimes the author spends many paragraphs describing and explaining in detail some things that could be explained briefly, for example, descriptions about the setting. On the other hand, things that seem to be more important are explained too brief that could be overlooked, for example, the relationships, sexual or not, that the protagonist has with women.
