Critical Analysis Essay I reviewed an article entitled, “What Got Lost in the Debate About Birth Control” by Erika Christakis. The title of the article suggests it will be discussing issues that have not been covered by public figures and the media on President Obama’s birth-control mandate. This article appeared in the Opinions section under Public Health of the Times website. Time is based out of New York City. Although, known for providing the world with unbiased factual news, it is based out of NY which is known for being a highly liberal state being one of the first to legalize gay marriage. This article was published on February 20, 2012. This article comes at a very controversial time for birth control. Obama originally announced that religious-affiliated employers would be forced to provide contraceptive coverage but recently he changed the mandate. After much heat from the Catholic church, he proposed that if the employer’s refused then health insurance would be responsible for providing coverage. This is where the article picks up. In the article, Christakis uses facts to show that the cost of providing birth control is not nearly that of the cost of unintended pregnancy. Also, that many unintended pregnancies end in abortion. Therefore, it is not the employers’ right to deny the majority of those that are unable to afford children, and want to reduce unintended pregnancies the coverage of birth-control. Lastly, she discusses how we live in America, and sometimes the cost of living in a free and safe country ran by a democracy is that we must deal with opposing opinions for the better of the majority. The author of this article, Erika Christakis, is an early childhood educator, public health advocate and Harvard College administrator.
