Scott Sociology X351; Urban Sociology Professor Markos Critical Analysis of Journey to Planet Earth Section A The narrator of the film “Journey to Planet Earth” is trying to convince its viewing audience that rapid and uncontrolled overpopulation is the root of issues mega cities face in maintaining their census and natural resources. The film focuses on four major mega cities; Mexico City, Istanbul, Shanghai, and New York City. The narrator gives detailed history of how the cities became inhabited. Great detail was given to the natural resources and the beauty of the land. The narrator then went on to discuss how the sudden influx of immigrants from other areas for whatever reason put a strain on the land’s resources and how lack of knowledge, effort, or resources kept the cities inhabitants from replenishing these valuable resources. The most general problems that was focused on in each city was poor air quality, decreased water supply, poor quality of the existing water supply, and lack of sewage treatment facilities. The problems with water supply and air quality were introduced into these countries by automobiles and factories. Automobiles and factories were initially introduced to give the cities inhabitants’ better financial opportunities. Governing officials in the mega cities were not prepared to deal with the negative consequences of expanding their cities so rapidly. Some specific problems that serve as examples of the general problems in Mexico City are the city’s location. Mexico City is located 1.5 miles from sea level in the valley and is boxed in by mountains. This keeps it from receiving wind to clean the air and clean water to cleanse the used supply.
