Critic Response: Black Comedy The play ‘Black comedy’ by Peter Shaffer talks about challenges faced by the middle class, a majority of most societies. Black comedy looks at issues like the crazy things we do for money, nothing stays hidden, and the heart wants what it wants. It looks at these challenges in a farcical way. Norm the director of the play captured Peter Shaffer’s message without being mundane. Norm’s interpretation of ‘black comedy’ adequately presented a visual form for the play; he stuck to the blue print of the play just adding little details to make it more relatable. Certain key aspects of the play like Brindsley’s apartment which shows his financial status, his artistic side and was also the stage in which all truths were unraveled; depicted just that and looking in on the stage you had this feeling of ‘yeah! That’s it’. The way the actors portrayed their characters, dialogue and stage movement helped emphasized the parts each play in the culmination of events. The cast physically and vocally held the essence of their characters making them come alive. This aided in making the play more realistic. The cast of ‘black comedy’ obviously had good acting skills. The actor who played Clea for example, had her own personal flare which depicted the sexual appeal and mischievous nature of Clea. Also, the actor portraying Brindsley had a disorganized streak about him making the audience see how disorganized his character is. The cast ensemble each had certain qualities which made their character believable. They worked together knowing when to talk, to be quiet, and when just to move around. If there were any missed cues or mistakes, I didn’t spot any. The cast worked so good together that they were able to cover up any mistakes without it being obvious.
