However, as time began to change the world, policing changed as well. In this paper this author will evaluate the past, present and future trends in the interface between components of the criminal justice system and criminal justice connections with surrounding society which involves policing in the United States of America. Past Trends Sometimes it’s better to let the things in the past, stay in the past but not when it comes to policing, back in the late 1800s and early 1900s police made people feel safe within their community. Police officers would walk the streets patrolling the neighborhood, standing on street corners talking to the neighbors in the community and actually getting to know the people who they help protect. That was when citizens and police officers actually knew each other
This is a pivotal part in terms of maintain the functioning of society and to ensure that people don’t go around breaking laws wherever and whenever they want. The criminal justice system is therefore a central part of society and without is society would quickly deteriorate into chaos. There are however a number of issues in the criminal justice system. Some of these issues include false convictions and bias within the courtroom. The tutorial discussion this week was essentially discussing how the system operates and some of the flaws within the system such as false convictions which come about through human error or in extreme cases racial bias (Alberto F. Alesina, Eliana La Ferrara, 2011).
Ethnicity and the Police By CJA344 The police department is leaving a bad impression in many minority communities, because of the corruption and brutality that comes from the police patrolling the areas. The police should leave a positive impression with the communities that they serve, this way the police will be able to ask the community for help when needed. There are a few people in the community that speak highly of the police because they have good experiences with the police and have positive opinions of the police and are more freely to cooperate with the police department. Lack of community support to the police force can lead to more crimes in the communities, as a result of the community the police can be less likely to work up to their full potential. “When crime rate goes up there is a further dip in the public perception of the police resulting in a greater antagonism towards the police on the part of the public “(1985).
Analyse the impact of two pieces of crime and disorder legislation. For police officers who are already familiar with crime and disorder legislation, they need to be reminded of the impact they may have on people, communities and the public services. Choose two pieces of crime and disorder legislation you have already discussed and analyse the impact they may have on individuals (including offenders, victims and witnesses), communities and the relevant public services. The Theft Act This is taking the property of another without the intension to give it back; this can have an impact on the victim as they’re without their property whatever it may be (car, phone, wallet, game) or any other property. The person then becomes deprived and feels insecure in case of any other incidents that may occur and they find themselves to be in the same situation, there’s many different types of theft such as robbery, theft, burglary, aggravated burglary.
It allows the police departments to take proactive law enforcement action normally before the gang gets an organized structure. The gang can or may range from a loose knit group of individuals who hang around together and commit crimes together, to a formal organization with a leader or ruling council, gang colors, gang identifiers could be such as tattoos, and a gang name. In the textbook on page 145, “Islands in the Street: Urban Gangs in the United States, it says that the functions that gangs fulfill or motives for joining a gang is to possible to escape a broken home, but many members that join still interact with their families. So that must not be the only reason in some cases of why people join gangs. It also say its because of money, drugs, woman, to commit a crime, and for protection because its better than the police.
Police Community Support Officers are government’s response to societies fears about rising crime. Discuss is relation to the U.S research into foot patrol. Society has always had this fear about rising crime, and to help reduce this fear the government responded by providing Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs). Within this assignment I am going to discuss how the government came about the idea, and also the benefits of having PCSOs about. I will also look into the U.S research into foot patrol.
As far as follow up to investigations, when a crime is committed and there are loose ends on the investigation, they may have to do a follow up, and that is when the reactive comes into effect. The difference between a proactive and reactive is, instead of responding to a call, the officer is out on the streets acting on their own initiative to gather information about crimes in the area they patrol, and how to suppress it. An example of this is the officer, getting out there, and meeting people in the community, so that they build a rapport, and make the community members want to help solve crimes, and give information on people who are bad for the community. If the functions of a police agency are limited in communities, I believe there would be more crime and issues at hand. Just a handful of local police or community agencies are not equipped to handle certain issues.
Time like after hurricane Katrina when public disorder ran rampant, police tried to maintain good order but needed help from the government. Local police are responsible for upholding the law with in their towns or city borders or jurisdictions. State agencies will maintain the state borders. Federal agencies will work across the country. All agencies will work together and collaborate in times of need.
Along with those programs came the NCVS or National Crime Victimization Survey, this survey is a self-reporting survey which victims report their own incidents. Although each are used to record crime for the nation, they each have their own uses and are used differently. The UCR crime reports are used in many ways, they provide law enforcement with date for use in police operations and planning for the future. The news and media also utilize the reports as well to inform the public about crime. Data is recorded by cities, counties, colleges, and states and submitted to the UCR.
As time passed, the colonists eventually developed their own system of criminal justice, and these practices helped to develop the system of corrections in America. Imprisonment was less common in the early colonial years, but the jail system soon found its way into being a staple of corrections in America. It wasn’t until the late 19th century that prisons in America shifted their focus – rather than just existing to punish criminals, prisons would now set goals to rehabilitate offenders through both education and skilled labor. Corrections in America would also make it a point to dedicate efforts towards mentally and emotionally re-training criminals so that they will be able to re-enter society when their sentence is complete. As the system of corrections in America has evolved, there have been several different subdivisions in this segment of the criminal justice system.
