Author O’Brian also confuses the reader by writing his novel as if everything that was told took place in the real world. For example, just by saying “this is true” (64) doesn’t always make it true. O’Brian leaves it up to the reader to distinct what they see the story as: reality or fiction. It is said that “a true war story… makes the stomach believe” (74). Author and character O’Brian tell the story in such a way to make it believable that the two different people are really the same person.
These symbols throughout the story include the old mans eye, the heartbeat and the contradiction between love and hate in which I will be talking about in this paper. When reading Edgar Allan Poe’s, “The Tell-Tale Heart”, it is more easily understood as a figurative text rather than a literal text. A literal reading of this story would make it very difficult to understand the details. By taking this story literally it is not easy to understand the entire meaning and representation of the story. In the beginning of the story, the narrator describes the old man’s eye.
As I Lay Dying The novel As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner tends to make readers confused when beginning to read it due to the theme the book entails. One of the main themes in the novel would have to be the difference of what are the truth and the explanation of what is true. Without a doubt any point is able to end in a massive amount of what is biased due to the different characters and their individual point of views. Each thought they have on what they believe true is dependent on their previous outlooks and thoughts. With that being said anything that is alleged can’t always necessarily be the truth.
Time could not support the demands that Gatsby was making. Gatsby catching the clock and his apology symbolizes the sensitivity of his plan and how necessarily his methods were. Fitzgerald uses symbols in The Great Gatsby to show different ideas and events throughout the book. Each symbol used throughout the novel has its own meaning to a specific idea or situation between characters. Symbols are very important in literature and they help add meaning to certain text or objects within the piece of writing.
The author uses allusion usually to describe protagonist Scott Hudson’s interest of reading. Allusion is the making reference to other novels, myths, etc. He makes inferences to books like Ender’s Game, To Kill a Mockingbird, Kubla Khan, The Waltz, The Princess Bride, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, The Outsiders and many more. Allusion creates an understanding of the plot because it is vitally descriptive of some of the rising action leading up to action and falling action leading to resolution. Without allusion, some of those actions would not make as much sense because they are not open to as much reference.
He is not just one character among several, it is through his eyes and ears that we form our opinions of the other characters making him unreliable. Seeing the world from the perspectives of the characters in As I Lay Dying requires a redefining of the reader's own semantic perception of the world. Understanding the novel's characters and their thoughts and feelings and motivations requires complete freedom from preconceived semantic associations; it requires redefining the associations the reader has with words and redefining the words themselves.
Secondary Characters When one has finished reading a book and is asked about it, one usually only remembers the main characters and their actions in the story. Unless one analyzes a piece of literature in depth, one cannot begin to imagine how secondary characters not only change the plot, but through interactions with the central characters they allow the reader to see different sides of the main character throughout the story without the reader knowing. Secondary characters are important in literature because they impact character development, influence the action, and develop theme as shown through Friar Lawrence in Romeo and Juliet and Uncle Teru in Sound of Waves Through Friar Lawrence’s encounters with the main characters Romeo and Juliet, he has brought out Romeo’s fickle minded character and Juliet’s absolute desire to be with Romeo. After Romeo and Juliet meet at the party and talk of marriage on Juliet’s balcony, Romeo goes to Friar Lawrence’s cell to ask him to marry Juliet and himself. The Friar responds with, “Young men’s love then lies/ Not truly in their hearts but, in their eyes jesu maria, what the deal of brine/ Hath washes thy sallow cheeks for Rosaline!”(2.3.68-90).
Not all Novels should be Clear In many causes while reading certain novels and stories you might wonder why some stories have so much changing to them Or why so much back and forward amongst each of the stories? Many of these things may happen not because the author is trying to confuse the reader instead because the author is trying to give the reader a better understanding of many stories through different perspectives. Throughout this essay you will learn about how a great author Junot Diaz portrays this sort of writing style. However, as I learn to write better I am starting to see why the author uses so many stories and many large words to get his point across. If the author did not go into detail about what he was writing about someone might not get the point that he was trying to get across. After reading Yosemite Mon Amour, numerous times I begin to have a clear understanding of why there is so much detail in the story. I felt that the essay was to long because of many stories that the author had written. At the time of first reading this story it seemed as though the author was jumping around and I had a hard time following where he was going with the story this started right from the first paragraph I had no idea why the author was describing Toyotas, and Winnebago’s and then jumping into describing rain.
