Frank Zhu Writing II Second Essay Professor Meltzer March 31, 2010 Creative Writing – Going to Ellis Island Discontented by the beliefs and financial difficulties of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, my family came to a decision: it was finally time to move to the United States. With the wide variety of jobs available, we thought we could do it. The American Dream. It’s a place to restart anew with opportunities everywhere. After lengthy consideration, we finally forged our thoughts into actions: to leave for Ellis Island in order to encounter that “glimmer of hope”. A heart wrenching good-bye was imminent for my dad couldn’t come along with us. We couldn’t afford it, but we had to take the risk. It was already too late to change our minds even though we were all very nervous and scared about the upcoming events. The boat rocked back and forth, mimicking the waves below. Minutes started to feel like hours, hours felt like days. It was unbearable. I saw the long line of immigrants ahead, ants compared to the ship. I heard my heartbeat thumping nervously as I saw people staggered onboard. This is it. We were finally leaving. Perhaps this would be the last time we would ever see this place. I took one last glance at the place that would only live on in my memory. Thoughts of my new “home” rushed through my head when my mom tapped me on the shoulder and said sweetly, “Come on, it’s time to get inside.” I turned around and sluggishly followed her into the interior of the ship. The moment I stepped into the ship, I felt a wave of the humidity gushed at my face, the temperature rising as I walk further in. The room was hot and sweaty. We found a triple bunk bed as we went deeper into the ship. Consequently, my mom, my brother, and I bunked together.
