Ghandi once said, “We must be the change we want to see” (Keilburger & Major, 305). Craig Keilburger followed that quote in its entirety. He believed that we are all responsible for today’s children, and that each person has the ability to make a difference. Keilburger once stated, “The change starts within each one of us and ends only when all children are free to be children” (Keilburger & Major, 305). With his tremendous actions and beliefs toward the treatment of others, he is able to show people that the Kingdom of God can truly be created on Earth. Craig Keilburger strives to create the Kingdom of Heaven through his astounding efforts as a young leader in today’s society. He did this by forming a human rights organization called Free the Children, providing education about social justice issues to children all over the world and presenting a Me-To-We philosophy that works towards building a more just society for all people. Some people’s lives are transformed gradually, while others are changed in an instant. It was the morning of April 19, 1995, when Craig was only twelve years old when his life had been changed forever. The front-page picture of a boy wearing a bright red vest with his fist held high caught his attention. The headline read, “Battled Child Labour, Boy 12, Murdered.” The article told the story of Iqbal Masih, the story of a child sold into slavery at the age of four. At the age of ten he escaped but was murdered two years later for speaking against the exploitation of children. Craig was shocked to discover that slavery still existed, especially among children (Keilburger & Major, 8). To find out more about child labour he contacted human rights organizations and with a small group of friends from school he formed his own human rights organization called Free the Children (Keilburger, Turning, 51).
