RUNNING HEAD: OBESITY IN CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS Obesity in Children and Adolescents Pro Seminar Marjorie M Mwanza Ottawa University Abstract In recent years there has been a growing concern over the increase in childhood and adolescent obesity in the world today. Obesity has become one of the major medical problems today. According to Nakaya (2006), “Through out the latter half of the twentienth century, two things have increased steadily in countries all over the world: television viewing by children and child obesity.” Obesity is a condition described as an excess of body weight in the form of fat. According to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP), “between 16 and 33 percent of children and adolescents are obese in the United States of America. The annual cost to society for obesity is estimated at nearly $100 billion.” From studies that have been conducted in recent years, it is believed that overweight children are much more likely to became overweight adults. Unless children and adolescents adopt and maintain healthier lifestyles, obesity will continue to be a national problem.
