* Understand a major therapeutic model of counselling: 1.1 Analyze the philosophy of one major therapeutic model to it’s * Origins * Historical Development to the present day * The people influential in its development The basic philosophy of the person centered approach is that (as Carl Rogers believed) “each person has sufficient innate resources to deal with effectively with whatever trauma, conflicts or dilemmas they are experiencing. This belief in the Strength and integrity of human beings is fundamental tenet of person-centered counselling. Even when an individual’s resources are latent or hidden, they are always acknowledged as being present and having potential for growth and development. He held the belief that all clients have the potential for self- direction and the motivation to achieve insight into their own problems if the person - centered counsellor is willing to allow clients to move at their own pace and to choose their own values and standards whether we agree or not. Once clients become aware that another person believes in their capacity to cope and to manage their own problems, they have a remarkable tendency to do just that. Rogers believed by applying the six core conditions that was all that was sufficiently needed for change … which are: * That the counsellor and client make psychological contact * That the client is vulnerable or anxious i.e. see themselves as being in need of help * That the counsellor is more integrated and balanced than the client and can therefore be genuine or as Rogers puts it, can accurately be himself in the relationship * The therapist experiences unconditional positive regard for the client * The therapist experiences an empathic understanding of the clients internal frame of reference and endeavors to communicate this experience to the client * The
