According to Skinner (1984), guidance is a process of helping an individual to learn to adjust to self to others and to circumstances. Skinner explains that guidance is a process by which individuals solves their problems by their own efforts. The concept of guidance is to help the individual to know himself and his surrounding in other to relate himself more satisfactorily. This can be achieved through the guidance services which include counseling service, information service, placement service, consulting service, appraisal service, etc. It is meaningless for an individual to know himself without effecting a change in knowledge, skill, attitude, habit or behavior to relate himself more satisfactorily to social requirement and opportunities. In view of the above logic, counseling among the guidance services, is the only service that effect a change in human behavior. In other words, counseling serves as the functional bridge between the individual and the opportunities in his environment. Counseling explores the difficulties of the individual, the distress he/she may be experiencing, loss of a sense of direction and purpose. Counseling does not give advice or direction for the individual to take a course of action. Counseling helps the individual to look at the options open to him and help him to decide the best for himself. It is worth noting that, the holistic approach of counseling would not achieve its intended objectives without the contribution of other services. Therefore counseling requires additional knowledge and supportive assistance from other services.
