I Thessalonians states, “We urge you, brethren, admonish the unruly, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with everyone. See that no one repays another with evil for evil, but always seek after that which is good for one another and for all people. Rejoice always; pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (I Thessalonians 5:14-18). This is the root and groundwork for counselors. The scriptures specifically emphasizes urging, warning, encouraging, helping, listening, probing, and goal setting. When it comes to urging the Christian counselor must comfort and console, giving an environment of security. Warning follows as it is necessary to address sin in such a way that the counselee understands that sin is not of God. Encouragement is essential in the counseling process as it inspires and reassures that there is a better way. Christian counselors are helpers one to another, supporting and building up hurting people. In counseling a good listener will pay close attention to what the counselee is communicating without being bias. Probing is the process of asking appropriate questions in an attempt to get to the root of the problem. Goal setting many times requires implementing a treatment plan, putting together a course of actions utilizing both research and biblical methods.
