English 9A: Growing Up: Family Narrative Mia Ippoliti My Family Narrative Last year my family and I took a spring break vacation to the beautiful state of Washington. Originally we had wanted to visit the Olympic Peninsula because of our love for the Twilight Saga book series but after researching on-line we realized that there was lots to see besides the infamous small city of Forks. We planned to visit the only rain forest in the United States as well as several wild nature beaches where we would spend low tide hours exploring the sea life inside of tide pools. We also planned to stay a few nights at two different Native American reservations on the west coast right on the Pacific Ocean! We named the trip "Our Wild Northwest Adventure."
The first one had been hastily delivered to Bishop Ludwig Schwarz of the prosperous Austrian center of Vienna, city of the nightly opera and lovely wide boulevards which illuminated in the midsummer evenings. When not leading Mass at St. Stephen's Cathedral in the Stephansplatz, he returned to the comforts of a custom-built pleasure palace, constructed at the hands of indentured Turkmen servants and paid for with the willing money of parishioners. In the evenings, courtesans delighted him with lavish dinners and bathed him with the finest of soaps and shampoos. At night, his mistress would wish him a good night, carefully tuck him into authentic Nanjing silk sheets, and return an hour later, naked from head to toe. On the weekends, Ludwig Schwarz would attend the musical exhibitions of composer Johann Strauss, where he would be surrounded by his well-planned posse of Austrian

Now the future seems brighter for the United States and it is being expressed greatly through the abundance of this new plastic pink flamingo that seems to make Americans feel livelier. It is through the use of Allusions that Price shows us how the pink flamingo has become a great symbol for the United States culture. First she tells us how in the 1930’s vacationing Americans themselves were going to Florida and returning home with a pink flamingo as a souvenir. She also mentions how in the 1910s and 1920s the first grand hotel in Miami Beach named The Flamingo gave more fame to the bird due to its great wealth. This caused an outbreak in architects persuading them into making more flamingo designs.
Flint, once the hometown of one of the biggest corporations in America with the automobile industry as almost the sole driving force behind its economy, ends up being a town with one of the highest crime and unemployment rates. Moore uses vivid images throughout the movie to emphasize his point, to drive it home to the minds of people behind corporations, and to put forward to the public the true depiction of what we call democracy, and enable us to realize how the term “democracy” can be used, through the logic of the people behind corporate houses. Throughout the movie, we are told that Moore tried several times to interview GM’s chairman Roger Smith to get answers to his questions about the plant being shutdown and relocated to Mexico. Moore also informs his viewers that he wished to place before Smith the consequences of his company’s actions which caused a tremendous alteration in the local economy, shifting peoples’ lives from affluence to abject destitution. GM at that point of time, was a multi-billion dollar corporation, and Moore argues that the relocation was done to take advantage of the cheaper labor force available there, a corporate greed for more profits and desire for ultimate power.
