Correlates of English and Spanish proficiency in Hispanic immigrants in South Florida Lola Vargas Florida Atlantic University Research Methods Fall 2012 Abstract English and Spanish proficiency in Hispanic immigrants in South Florida is affected by numerous factors, two of which are age of immigration to the U.S. and degree of identification with the Hispanic or American culture. This paper aims to analyze the Pearson correlation between the factors and English then Spanish proficiency. One hundred and thirty nine participants who were born in Spanish speaking countries and now reside in the U.S. were survey using a modified version of the Language Experience and Proficiency Questionnaire (LEAP-Q). All four correlations where significant showing that age of immigration to the U.S is inversely related to English proficiency but positively related to Spanish proficiency and degree of identification to each culture is positively related to its native language respectively. For those immigrants, English proficiency is essential in order to succeed in the U.S. Hispanics, in particular, are the biggest minority in the country (Warren, 2003) hence immigrants form Spanish speaking countries have the need to become bilingual.
