CORRELATES OF CORRECTIONAL OFFICER JOB STRESS: The Impact of Organizational Structure The article “Correlates of Correctional Officer Job Stress: The Impact of Organizational Structure,” is a study that was conducted to determine if there was a correlation between organizational structure on correctional officer job stress. Instrumental communication, integration, centralization, and legitimacy were forms of organizational structure discussed in the article. According to Allen, Hogan, & Lambert (2006), centralization, which is defined in the study as control employees have in decisions making and how it affects the staff and organization, was found to have a counter impact on the organization commitment and job satisfaction. Instrumental communication, which is defined as the information employee received about their task, their job, organizational issues and concerns, had a positive link between the correctional staff and the organization. Integration, which is the degree that an organization stresses and allows over work groups, was found to lead to a friendly and pleasant work environment with higher integration. And lastly legitimacy, the article stated, “Organizations must be perceived to have legitimacy by the workers in order to be effective.” The study observed mixed results. In the bivariate analysis, organizational structure had a major correlation with job stress. In the multivariate analysis, and procedural justice and instrumental communication were indicated as a direct cause of job stress on correctional staff (Allen, Hogan, & Lambert, 2006). The contributors of the study, Allen, Hogan, & Lambert (2006), believed that the study demonstrated the need to explore additional sources of stress for correctional staff and hoped that the article will stimulate more research.
