Between 1530 and 1600, nearly four hundred enormous mission conventos and vistas were built and decorated with paintings and sculptural reliefs by skilled artisans in Mesoamerica. This is the largest building and decoration program ever happened in so short of a period and in so large of an area anywhere on the earth. These conventos and vistas were constructed to serve the purpose of providing appropriate settings where that Christian doctrine could be taught to millions of Indians that were suddenly under Spanish control and rule after the conquest of the Aztec empire in 1521. This was reflected in all the Indian society’s own turf, as that the area is surround of a wall of mountains holding up the sky, and a tree would be in the middle serving as the link between the sky and the underworld. It was found that even after the conquest, many Indian communities continued to build their towns according to this quincunx form, with a central plaza surrounded by four residential buildings situated on each of the cardinal directions. This led to the design of Mexican convento patio having four corners, and because of the Indians’ traditional culture, the patio soon evolved into a “theater” for the Indians to perform and dance. At each corner of the patio, a small square chapel called posa (a place for pausing) was built, symbolizing the four cardinal directions. Moreover, the layout of entrances, exists, and internal altars of the angled posas were designed in a way that the circulation was to move the crowd in a counterclockwise direction, and this is believed to follow the Indians’ tradition.
