The Abortion Issue: Compare and Contrast Point-by-Point Format One of the most divisive issues in America is the controversy surrounding abortion. Currently, abortion is legal in America, and many people believe that it should remain legal. These people, pro-choice activists, believe that it is the women's right to chose whether or not to give birth. However, there are many groups who are lobbying Congress to pass laws that would make abortion illegal. These people are called the pro-life activists.
There are many viewpoints on the topic, pro-life and pro-choice, and sometimes people will disagree with others in their own category. Judith Jarvis Thomson assumes, in her essay A Defense of Abortion, that a fetus is a human being from the moment of conception. She does not state she believes this, but uses it as a premise for her argument on why and when abortion should be permitted. She uses analogies to illustrate why, in times of rape and failed contraception, abortion should be allowed. Mary Anne Warren, in her essay On the Moral and Legal Status of Abortion, talks about one of Thomson’s analogies and refutes it.
The book for itself told me that it was going to be about abortion and indeed there were going to a lot of trouble. One of the most controversial topic that society and lawmakers often debate about is abortion. Lastly, Bronner transitioned to the views of the religious groups and employers who believed that the Health Care Act was forcing them to choose between their country’s laws and their own religious beliefs. Because the author included credible sources to bolster each view on the Health Care Act and explained the differing views on the subject, I believe that the use of ethos was very effective in this article.
The newspaper article is about a bill that will imprison anyone who kills a fetus that has a heartbeat. Reading this article made me wish the outcome was different. I would have liked to see this bill passed. The magazine article is about a pill that takes the job of an abortion clinic and is becoming really popular in Mexico today. Reviewing this article did not change my mind on abortion.
