Tyler Crippen Dr. Severson English 1102 19 April 2012 Civil disobedience: An Annotated Bibliography Civil disobedience is defined as "the active refusal to obey certain laws, demands and commands of a government, or of an occupying power. It is one of the primary methods of nonviolent resistance". (Brown 674) For centuries leaders of some of the biggest movements in history have been using tactics to employ civil disobedience which eventually changed government laws and perceptions on the people they were affecting. One of the most prominent figures of civil disobedience who was never scared to push the limits was Henry David Thoreau. Thoreau became sick of paying taxes and decided to move out into the woods to escape the society he lived in.
response to EMBRYONIC STEM CELL RESEARCH: THE BLOOD TRAIL OF PROGRESS Paul A. Ibbetson a writer for The Conservative Crusader, defends and also attempts to clarify the typical conservative stance on stem cells in his article “Embryonic Stem Cell Research: the Blood Trail of Progress”. Ibbetson fails to justify his point that non-embryonic stem cell research is viable while embryonic stem cell research is immoral due to a number of errors in his delivery. The foremost among these is the logical fallacy of appeal to consequences; Ibbetson makes a half-hearted attempt to compare Hitler’s policy on genocide akin to Obama’s position on stem cell research, yet never truly explains the explanation. Another logical fallacy presented towards the
One of the most influential people in Rome was Marcus Cicero, a great philopsoper as we say and exam most of his work today we see a story of a honored and respected man as well as loyal, but his loyalty would prove to be his greatest downfall and which would lead to his exicution. (pg. 149) Rome was built of lawyers, judges, and philosophers. (pg. 149) The romans were more practical thinkers and philosophers.
John Marshall 4th Supreme Court justice chief served for a drawn out time of 34 years of service is the single greatest symbol in American law. Marshall not only brought out the power of the Court but also set many important precedents which helped outline the structure of the Supreme Court today. I believe if anyone figure should represent American law it should be Marshall, due to his long lasting precedents and establishment of the court as a strong federal power. In the case of Marbury v. Madison (1803) Marshall set the precedent of judicial review, which allowed the Supreme Court to have a final say in all matters regarding the Constitution. Even if the law had been passed and signed by the President himself.
However, Marshall completely renovated the judicial branch implementing new policies that would remain a part of United States government through court case rulings and his federalist ideals. Marshall, one of the Midnight Judges, was appointed Chief Justice of the United States by John Adams in the last few weeks of his presidency. Throughout his 34 year term, Marshall reshaped the American government and made the Supreme Court the final interpreter of the Constitution. He reinforced the idea that the Court has the power to overrule the Congress, the states, the President, and all lower courts. One of his most famous rulings was the Marbury vs Madison case, which established the principle of judicial review, the power of the Supreme Court to rule whether or not a law is constitutional or not.
He was multidirectional and knowledgeable in various subjects, especially in politics and administration. Also, he was widely known as the author of the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson’s extraordinary words have changed a society and his human fight for rights made him a hero. His writings emphasized the rights of humanity and how a government should provide rights to its people. Among Jefferson’s successes during the Presidency, his greatest achievement was in 1809, when Jefferson chose Meriwether Lewis and his close friend William Clark to explore the rest of America and map
The Contributions of Thomas Jefferson Thomas Jefferson is remembered today for contributing in many ways to the making of our great nation. Typically, when his name is heard, one thinks of his major role in constructing the Declaration of Independence, the Louisiana Purchase, and as being the third president of our great nation. Upon reviewing Jefferson as not only a historical figure, but as a human being, I found him to be a fascinating and complex individual. Not only does his bust grace the front of the nickel coin, his home Monticello is on the back and with good reason. It is hard not to walk away from researching this president without considering him to be a near genius and a major player in the shaping of our country’s foundation.
Cooper on the other hand used Wilson’s weaknesses to criticize him. In Woodrow Wilson: A Biography, Cooper expresses his views concerning Wilson’s worst behavior. For example, Cooper often stressed throughout the book that, “he wanted to restrict voting right to white men, not
Civil Disobedience In “Resistance to Civil Government” or, “Civil Disobedience”, Henry David Thoreau, a big advocate of civil disobedience and it served him well while he pursued it with passion. In the work Thoreau describes civil disobedience and his firsthand account of it. It is a riveting tale of his vicious battle with the United States government, preceded by a rant on the ineffectiveness of “most” governments. Even a quick glance at the ancient tome would convince the reader that Thoreau maintains the belief that if a government violates an agreement or wrongs a citizen in any way, it is the moral duty of the individual to speak up and demand compensation for the governments transgressions. Further, one could be led to believe that
