When it comes to comparing and contrasting Commercial and Fashion photography, Commercial Photography sells a product and Fashion Photography sells a lifestyle. Fashion and Commercial photography are usually in the category of Advertising Photography and the reason being is that both Commercial and Fashion foremost try to sell a certain product. Commercial photography predominantly sells a product so as the emphasis of the whole photoshoot is directed toward the product. Which means the lighting, styling, and the background are usually very plain. In many catalog shoots the model is standing in front of a white background wit a light above the camera and to either side of the camera, and the model wears very natural looking make-up. Commercial photography is done for commercial purposes, for example magazine advertising, brochures, restaurant menus, etc. It involves a client that wants to sell or promote something for which they need an image, a photograph. Unlike commercial photography the main focus in fashion photography does not stop with the garment, but it lies with the mood and styling of the image. The garment is simply just an accessory to show a certain lifestyle. You usually won’t see plain white backgrounds in fashion photography and the models are styled very dramatically wearing thick eyeliners, dramatic eye shadows, contoring etc. With the styling dramatically increased also comes increased lighting which makes the image look more dramatic and edgey. Fashion photographers tend to use a wide variety of lights and accessories to go along with it. Iit’s about the effect of the lighting and not about how many lights you use to get that effect.Fashion photoghraphy has had big changes to it over the past 30 years becoming more than simply reproducing an image of clothing or accessories, but to bring across to the viewer attitude and life to the image.
