Consumer Behavior Case 4.3 1. A ritual situation can be described as a socially defined occasion that triggers a set of interrelated behaviors that occur in a structured format and that have symbolic meaning. The ritual situations that play a role in this case are quite simply the major holiday of Christmas. This largely public ritual situation is a major factor for retailers because a huge amount of shopping is associated with this holiday. 2. Target is using a multi-channel marketing strategy to target consumers who prefer to do their Christmas shopping early by doing several things. They are still stocking some Christmas merchandise in the store earlier than the holiday season, and they are sending emails and direct mail to only select customers prior to the main holiday launch. 3. By engaging in Christmas creep, the marketers are playing the role of responding to the consumer problem. Marketers have recognized that the problem facing consumers is the fact that they need to purchase gifts and supplies for the Christmas season. In response to this problem recognition, marketers are attempting to give consumers the opportunity to do their holiday shopping in advance. 4. Atmospherics are extremely important to a retail location. A store’s atmosphere affects the shopper’s mood and emotions and willingness to visit and linger. It also influences the consumer’s judgments of the quality of the store and the store’s image. A store that participates in Christmas creep must pay close attention to the atmospherics. The music should be holiday music, but not to the extent that it overwhelms customers. It would also be important to make the consumer feel comfortable and relaxed, perhaps with the use of music and odors. Decorating a store well before Thanksgiving, or Halloween could have a negative effect as well. Shoppers who do not like the Christmas
