At the end of the “ Adventures of the speckled Band” Sherlock Holmes admits that the death of Dr Grimesby Roylott is not likely to weigh very heavily upon my conscience”,Does Sherlock Holmes have a conscience? Sherlock Holmes has a conscience because he does care about the wellbeing of others. Sherlock Holmes cares about solving the crime for the person or people involved. And he shows a caring side of himself when a victim does come to him, for example in “The Adventures of the Speckled Band” Sherlock Holmes shows kindness and comfort to Helen Stoner ““You must not fear”, said he soothingly, bending forward and patting her forearm” and also when he sees that she has been hurt “the marks of five livid spots, that marks of four fingers and a thumb, were printed on the white wrist. “You have been cruelly used”, said Holmes”. In the story of “ Abbey Grange” of the killing of Sir Eustace Brackenstall by Captain Croker the lover of Lady Brackenstall. Holmes lets Captain Croker go because he did the crime out of passion because he wanted to save his lover form the hands of a violent husband. “I have so much sympathy for you that if you choose to disappear in the next twenty four hours I will promise you that no-one will hinder you. Holmes shows compassion and decides to show mercy and lets him go.
