The Guanxi practice which means relationship or connections in China despite its bad sides was well accepted culture in China. In order for one to be successful in business in China, one should be aware about the Guanxi culture. The RDH thought HI would bring improvements and they really disappointed the Chinese Government.
However Timbuk2 has still taken measures to ensure that the same quality found in the messenger bag is present in the laptop bag although they are not produced in the same locations. An additional advantage of the laptop bag production in China is lowered labor costs, which allows Timbuk2 to produce a quality product at a reasonable price. Reference: Jacobs, F. R., & Chase, R. B. During the tenure of former CEO Steve jobs, Apple had extreme unprecedented success. Garnering an almost cult-like following with its innovations, Apple found itself in very unique position in that the products it manufactured were first to market, essentially creating a new market for competitors to challenge it in. While there where computers, phones and mp3 players from different companies none had the integration and usability across all it’s platforms like Apple did. This allowed it to sell one product to a consumer but guarantee this product would work with its other devices. Additional to this, it brought to market a phone that integrated various technologies.
Gap Analysis: Riordan Riordan Manufacturing opened a production facility in China. Because it flourished, Riordan's CEO wanted to add another facility. By adding another facility, Michael Riordan hopes to provide the company with additional international opportunities. The competition in China results in a lack of skilled labor; however, labor from nearby countries is available to Riordan Manufacturing. Using workers from these other countries requires Riordan Manufacturing to consider cross-cultural issues.
The consequence for the lack of critical thinking in decision making has been revealed through recent corporate scandals such as Enron (Braun, 2004, p. 232). To improve these skills, business leaders believe that more focus be made on teaching critical think in business schools over anything else (Braun, 2004, p. 232). While many professionals agree with this, I believe, rather than waiting until college, these skills and tools can be developed at a young age by shifting from the more traditional passive teaching methods to a more active teaching style. Traditionally, passive teaching has been the most common approach used by professors. This method usually involves professors delivering lectures to students with little to no opportunity for student input through “discussion or experiential exercises” (Michel, Cater, & Varela, 2009, p. 400).
Timbuk2 is handling the problem correctly by making sure that the bags are being made in China are up to the standard of the bags that are made in San Francisco. To ensure that customers should not have concerns or worries, Timbuk2 visits China every four to eight weeks to ensure superior quality standards and working conditions. For Timbuk2’s custom messenger bags, the key competitive dimensions that are driving sales are the durability and the affordability of these bags. With a combination of high quality and affordability, items tend to sell at a higher margin. The competitive priorities of the custom the laptop bags produced in China are no different than the messenger bags produced in San Francisco.
My short-time internship experience in Bank of Nanjing gave me the chance to know about how the investment-banking department operates, and it interested me. However, the investment banking industry in China is still immature because of limited talents and low efficiency of resource allocation; few investment banks are actually making profits. I believe that if you want to learn, you have to learn from the best. Therefore I plan to stay in United States after graduation to work and gather experiences. Even though the Chinese market is not mature right now, yet nobody can deny that it has enormous potential and opportunities.
